William A. Haviland attended the University of Pennsylvania were he recieved his B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. He curently is a professor at UVM were he has worked since 1965. He has carried out archaeological field work at several locations in South Dakota and Vermont, physical anthropological fieldwork at several locations in Guatemala, and ethnographic fieldwork at several locations in Maine. This experience has allowed William Haviland to be the author of numerous research articles published in books and in both international and national journals.
He has also came out with several books on different civilizations. His books include monographs on the ancient Maya of Tikal, Guatemala, and the Vermont Indians. His book dealing with the Vermont Indians was co-authored with Marjory Power (a reader in cultural anthropology) and co-edited with Robert Gordon. Another book on creationism was co-edited with Stephen Pastner. His work didn't stop here he wrote three introductory textbooks used frequently in diverse countries as China, Israel, the Netherlands, South Africa, and one of the texts is the most widely used text in North America. These articles helped him get more world-wide recognition and respect.
He has also served as technical advisor for the Emmy Award winning telecourse, "Faces of Culture", and worked on the Advisory Board for the archaeology telecourse, "Out of The Past". He currently serves as the co-editor of the series, "Tikal Reports". The research carried out at the ancient Maya city of Tikal was published by the Museum at the University of Pennsylvania.
William A. Haviland has accomplished a lot in his life and a lot of his work is related to his many interests. Haviland's research interests include diverse topics as ancient Maya settlement patterns, social organization, skeletal remains, gender and graffiti in Tikal, relation between rock art, and the culture history and present situation of Abenaki Indians in Vermont.
